Over the past decade, one of the strongest trends in consumer food marketing has been the shift towards "organic" foods, away from heavy use of pesticides and herbicides. The public wants a food supply free of chemicals and hormones. Given Monsanto data showing hormone levels as high as 1000 times greater in bGH-induced milk, it is sheer scandal for the company and FDA officials to assert hormone-derived milk is "the same" as natural cows milk, let alone safe.
What is the track record of the bGH manufacturers? Monsanto has been a major manufacturer of 2,4, 5-T (including Dioxin) and PCBs. |

Chapter 12
Biotechnology in Medicinal Crop Improvement
Efraim Lewinsohn Ya'akov Tadmor
INTRODUCTION
Recent advances in molecular biology have offered promising tools for the creation of many novel crop varieties with improved nutritional and health values, resistance to herbicides, pests, diseases, pollutants, and adverse climatic conditions. These improvements have been accomplished by the use of molecular markers to monitor breeding programs and by using genetic engineering to introduce new traits to plants. |
| These chemicals may act as toxic deterrents to browsing by mammals or insects (like morphine from poppies or nicotine from tobacco),1 or defenses against various pathogens (like the salicylates found in willows and birches),2 or as herbicides against competing plants (like phenolic compounds such as chloro-genic acid from sunflowers)3. All of these actions are in place in the interest of the plant producing them. Such biologically active secondary chemicals are responsible for the healing action of these plants when humans use them as medicines. |
| Plant protection: Pesticides and herbicides are minimized to the necessary level; staff is trained; applications are documented.
Harvesting: Under the best conditions of weather and plant stand, equipment is clean and avoids damage of plants and mixing with strange plants or contaminants.
Primary processing: Building and equipment is clean and well serviced; drying method crop-specific; avoiding direct sunlight and drying on the ground; personnel is trained.
Packaging: Clean and dry, nontoxic packaging is used. |

Other diseases designated as associated with herbicides include chloracne (a skin condition), soft tissue sarcoma, Hodgkin's disease, multiple myeloma, respiratory cancers, prostate cancer, and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Spina bifida in the children of veterans is also considered grounds for compensation from the Agent Orange Act. Agent Orange is not only found in tissues of soldiers from the Vietnam war, but, according to an EPA study in 1982, it is also found in the tissue of 76% of the general American public. |

Currently, the lack of knowledge on technology and tools (selecting variety, registering herbicides, using specialized machines) are the major problems in cultivation. In several countries, progress may be observed among those farmers with state support.
• In Ihe 1980s, the requirement and possibility of applying quality control systems attracted considerable attention.21 At that time, the Working Group of the ISHS Section MAP began to deal with recommendations and guidelines for Good Agricultural Practice (GAP). |

Avoidance of saturated and trans fats, adequate essential fats, and avoidance of chemical pesticides, herbicides, and plastics that mimic estrogen are important. Incorporation of organic fruits and vegetables, especially those that aid in the detoxification function of the liver (such as dandelion and bitter greens, beets, brassicas, apples, cherries) is recommended.
Avoidance of sexual intercourse during menstruation is warranted, as retrograde endometrial lining flow is considered a potential etiology. |

>¦ Dispose of any herbicides, weed killers, insect sprays, and other noxious substances (responsibly of course), and replace them with more environmentally friendly products.
þ To create more natural predators for the insects in your garden, leave a pile of logs in your garden so they can hibernate over winter. You can also create a small area of wilderness in your garden that does not get cut, treated with chemicals, or cultivated. |
| People working with other types of pesticides, such as herbicides and insecticides, also have a higher risk of developing diabetes. As well as triggering hormonal damage, these chemicals can also cause dramatic swings in blood sugar levels. In fact, this diabetogenic nature of pesticides can be so powerful that one type of pesticide is used to induce diabetes in animals to create a model of the disease for research purposes. Diabetic animal models are also created by exposing animals to another form of artificial chemical in the form of an antibiotic known as streptozotocin. |
| Previous and current usage of concentrated forms of chemical pesticides and herbicides around your house and garden (fly spray, weed killer, flea powder).
_ Exposure to chemicals in medicines (nit shampoo, certain drugs, skin whiteners, etc.).
_ Smoking (tobacco contains a wide number of cancer-causing chemicals which include toxic metals).
_ Using nonenvironmentally friendly cosmetics, such as deodorants
(which contain aluminum), toiletries, such as hairsprays, perfumes, nail varnish, etc. (which contain solvents and plastics).
_ Using fluoridated toothpaste. |

Examples of such comprise genetically engineered crops resistant to pests and pathogens, including nematodes, insects, viruses, and fungi; products with extended shelf life; seeds with improved amino acid or oil composition, increased starch content, and improved flavors; and crops tolerant to environmentally friendly herbicides.5 In fact, genetically engineered soybean, corn, and cotton are increasingly produced in the United States. Avoid excess exposure to airborne hazards
• Limit exposure to garden chemicals such as rotenone, Roundup (glyphosate), diazinon, and other pesticides and herbicides. herbicides and pesticides should be used only sparingly in well-ventilated areas, ideally with protective respiratory masks such as chemical HEPA filters.
• Limit exposure to dry-cleaning solvents. If at all possible, consider hanging your dry-cleaned clothes outside to ventilate for a day before wearing.
• Car exhaust is toxic. Self-service gas stations may be cheaper, but spending time around them may be unhealthy. |

For instance, we know that cellular neurodegenerative diseases are connected to mercury, aluminum, pesticides and herbicides, and the way they produce brain damage is through an excitotoxic mechanism.
So, we are all exposed to those toxins, and then when you add MSG and excitotoxins to the food, you tremendously accelerate this toxicity. |

They come in the form of pesticides, herbicides and a couple of different chemicals. When some of these chemicals get into your body, turmeric makes them behave less like estrogen. It blocks them from attaching to the estrogen receptor in the breast tissue.
Even if the environmental estrogens actually get through and attaches to the estrogen receptor -- which means it causes cell division to speed up and so forth -- turmeric turns the volume down, so the cells don't grow and divide as rapidly as they normally would. |

The basic mechanism we can draw from the literature and my present pilot study is that, by removing heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, and DU, as well as through its effect of increasing immune system function, alkalizing the blood, blocking viral replication, and neutralizing free radicals, the NCD removes the blocks which compromise the vital life force. When the vital life force is freed up and activated, the body’s natural ability does the healing and relieving of these chronic diseases itself. With the NCD, we have returned to the basic natural healing theory for all chronic diseases. |
| Zeolite also improves liver function, indirectly improving elimination of pesticides, herbicides, and xeno-estrogens.
Zeolite appears to block viral replication, and may prove to be a potent anti-viral and general remedy for all viruses. To date, 40 anecdotal cases of herpes zoster have reportedly been healed. Preliminary anecdotal case studies suggest that it may help alleviate rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis C as well as the common cold and flu. |
| In testing people for a whole set of toxins consisting of 14 to 26 of the common heavy metals, pesticides, and herbicides, the people initially had on average 90 to 95% of the toxins in their liver, breast, and brain, whether they were live-food eaters or not.
The overall percentage of removal of these toxins from these organs was 88%, leaving only 12% of the toxins in their systems overall. This included 91% removal from the liver, 88% removal from the breast, and 87% removal from the brain. |
| In observing thousands of fasters since 1988, fasting alone—although wonderful for enhancing the vital force—does not seem to significantly get rid of pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals after 1 week by itself. |

By the way, I don't mean to leave out all those chemical companies manufacturing pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, toxic household cleaners and toxic personal care products. A lot of those skincare companies are really just chemical manufacturers with sexy marketing and lots of women in lab coats selling you products that actually harm your health; that literally contain ingredients that cause cancer and liver disease. People think our economy is booming, but we're all dying of chronic disease. Why is it that 50 percent of our senior citizens in the United States have high blood pressure? |

However, if you eat natural foods raised organically in the fresh air and sunshine, without pesticides and herbicides, then you're going to be clean and purified. Even your mental state will achieve higher levels of clarity.
Your roadmap to outstanding health
"You are what you eat" is not just some old wives' tale. It is a powerful phrase that reflects the truth in the relationship between food and health. "You are what you eat" is a map, and it can be a guide to help you choose your foods carefully. |

In fact, I think it was the Philippines but I'm not sure, that they stopped doing pesticides and herbicides on the rice because the medical costs of treating the workers from the poisoning was greater than any profit they would make from the yield, so it's bigger mathematics.
Mike: A common theme of everything that people experience here is looking at the big picture: "What am I affecting, how is it affecting me and what's the long-term here?"
Cousens: We're really preparing people to be models, to affect their friends. |

The problem we now face is that substances containing MPTP-like fragments are used as herbicides, drugs, and intermediates in the synthesis of many artificial compounds, including some drugs. Our increased exposure to MPTP-like pesticides and contaminants is thought to be one of the reasons behind the recent increase in Parkinson's disease. |

A child who eats organic food has one-sixth the pesticides and herbicides of a child who is eating commercial food. We're doing a study about mothers' milk, and I'm not very happy about it because they are saying that it's so toxic. Now, I want to still say very clearly that taking mothers' milk is still better than doing anything else, but we're trying to figure out how to detox mothers, you know, before they get pregnant so that their milk is really good. |

Let's see, you'd have a renewable energy source, you'd have a crop that's good for the environment, a crop that doesn't need to be grown with pesticides or herbicides. Wouldn't that be terrible? To re-invigorate the whole farming industry in this country? Gotta outlaw hemp, but keep those drugs pumping.
Keep that drug economy pumping!
Keep that drug industry legal. Keep on poisoning the hearts, minds, bodies and nervous systems of all the people in this country. You've got to keep them on drugs. Why? Well, drugs are profitable. We're all invested in the drug companies. |

Now, a vegetarian mother has one percent of the pesticides and herbicides in her breast milk as a meat-eating mother, so this is pretty important stuff.
Mike: Indeed, indeed. I mean that infant is depending on that for everything, nervous system growth ...
Cousens: Everything, and so we're talking about what's practical. |

So we might run tests that, for example, evaluate how well the liver is detoxifying the chemicals in that person's environment, or we might run tests that measure the level of heavy metals or toxins like herbicides and pesticides the person's built up. Or we might run node tests to look at their intestines to see how well they're digesting their food, or if they're developing inappropriate bacteria in their intestines that are causing a toxic reaction. |

Inderjit's definitive book on plant herbicides, for example—filled with discussion of standard medicinal plants—never once hints that the chemicals discussed have any uses other than as agrochemicals which may facilitate various tillage systems.7
TWO DILEMMAS YIELD A SOLUTION
I suggest that these two arguments—the mother's memory and the apparency problem—overlap. The characteristics making a plant recognizable to nonliterate nonspecialists are likely to overlap with the characteristics that will increase the chance that plants contain substantial quantities of biologically active chemicals. |

The biotechnology industry asserts that GM technology will reduce the use of herbicides on crops, yet analyses of the U.S. agricultural industry show that the use of herbicides has actually increased significantly since GM planting started in 1996. Although herbicide use decreased slightly in the first three years of GM crop growing, use increased subsequently. During 2002 and 2003 in the United States, an average of 29 percent more herbicide was applied per acre on GM herbicide-tolerant corn than on non-GM corn. Dr. |

It is a profitable, working ranch that for half a century has not used pesticides, herbicides, poisons, or commercial fertilizers on the land, has not killed local predators such as coyotes, has not administered growth hormones, anabolic steroids, or antibiotics to the cattle. The Lasaters are by no means typical, but have worked hard to change how American beef is produced. Their philosophy of cattle ranching is based upon a simple tenet: "Nature is smart as hell."
Dale Lasater recently set up a company to sell organic, free-range, grass-fed beef. |
| As always, I recommend looking into organic taco sauces, since they are made from ingredients that have not been exposed to pesticides and herbicides. These sauces likely contain higher nutrient density as well.
Protein powders
Protein powder is an essential supplement for healthy people. The world of protein powders is vast and confusing, with a bewildering array of protein powder products that mostly cater to bodybuilders. Many protein powders contain chemical sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose, so this is the first ingredient to watch out for when purchasing protein. |
